Wow! Was awesome! Is almost 3am! Will say more about it post-sleep!
General
Webstock: Day 1
I’m at Webstock today and tomorrow. Although more was at Webstock, since it is now evening.
There have been great goodies!
(The lovely folks at Verb were giving out robots.)
(The lovely folks as DNA were giving out badges.)
There have also been great talks!
I particularly enjoyed a talk by Peter Morville on ambient findability, since it kind-of rubs up against some of the stuff that I’ve been playing with as far as visualising tags goes (I’ve been playing with using a combination of categories and tags for search, and also using something resembling a cross-referenced book index to try and better express a collection of tags than a tag cloud manages to do. I should really make another post on that…)
Cal Henderson also did a great talk relating to the kinds of tools to use for building software which will no doubt produce a flurry of activity next week.
And Kelly Goto did a fantastic talk on the nature of being stuck or unstuck.
Who knows what tomorrow will bring! The schedule knows, I’m sure.
Pending New Home
In a couple of months time, if all goes according to plan, I am going to be heading to Canada for a year, through the NZ-Canada working holiday program.
This is very exciting, let me tell you.
Two important things!
Wellington People! I am selling a giant pile of DVDs, books, CDs, musical instruments, furniture and homewares. If you’re in Wellington City, you should buy my lovely things.
Toronto People! I plan on heading in your general direction, since it’s conveniently located for getting to all sorts of other places. Which is not to say that Toronto doesn’t also look fantastic for doing stuff (I’m looking at you, Toronto School of Circus Arts). If you’re looking for a programmer type around about May, you should let me know.
Site Upgrade! Total Doom! Not Doom Now!
Eveything is fine! TextDrive/Joyent are awesome.
Awesomes!
I moved my DNS from the folks I have my domain registered with to the folks who host my website so that subdomains would work properly.
Which caused my email to stop working (If you need to get in touch, christine.davis at gmail.com is a good choice of email). You may have received a bounce message d:
Alas, changing my DNS back hasn’t made any difference to my email (and subdomains don’t work any more); and you might see a domain holding page (well, you won’t. Other, less fortunate souls might).
This is all terribly frustrating; what with being at step -1, where it’s more broken than when I started.
Site Upgrade! Fun!
Everything is probably broken and funny looking. I know this (: When I think that it’s not broken and funny looking, I’ll probably post something to that effect, then you can tell me about the fifty broken and funny looking things I’ve forgotten.
But at least I’m using a modern-era version of WordPress, now!
Adventures into the Land of Quartz
When I was in Melbourne, I ended up hanging out with the lovely dpwolf. Some of the stuff he knows about things I don’t, leaked out. And now I know enough to be dangerous. Muahaha.
One of the things that leaked out, was the existence of Quartz Composer. Which I have been abusing at length trying to get it to jump through the hoops I want using some experimental MIDI interfaces that the infinitely patient Chris Wright of Kineme cobbled together (for me? Maybe <:). There comes a point where you put toy which is making the bad words come out down, and pick up different toys instead.
So I’ve been playing with rendering stuff! Without MIDI (: These are two closely related animations. On the left is Jelly; ’cause there’s a little patch where it looks like jellyfish tentacles, sortof, and I’m fond of jellyfish (but I wouldn’t want to give one a hug). On the right is Points. Because it’s pointy <:
I have no idea if they will display properly (or at all..) if you’re not using a mac. Sorry (: They might also go verrryslooooowly if you’re using much less than a core 2 duo processor. On the other hand, if you have all the grunt in the world; clicking on the movies will take you to a 720p version.
Now that we’re grown ups…
Oh wells
I don’t think I’m the presentation type d:
But at least it is behind me now <:
Plz Sned Exprt: iPod Touch + sqlite + WordPress = not quite
I have an ipod touch.
And I jailbroke it. (Worked like it says on the box, incidentally)
And I have Apache + PHP working.
And I have WordPress 2.2.2 for Sqllite on it.
But alas, writes to the database aren’t happening.
(I installed it on a Real Computer and put the .db file it created on to my iPod; and WordPress is able to read data from it A-OK. It just isn’t writing to it. The permissions on the .db file are 777; same for the folder its in. I’ve also tried renaming it to .sqlitedb which matches some of the other sqlite databases that the iPod uses, but that made no difference either.)
Halp?
